Product Detail 20 grams of the finest quality Ground Mahlep. Description Mahlep Mahlab Mahleb or Mahlepi is an aromatic spice made from the seeds of the St Lucie Cherry (Prunus mahaleb). The cherry stones are cracked to extract the seed kernel which is about 5 mm diameter soft and chewy on extraction but ground to a powder before use. Its strong aroma means that it only need be used in very small quantities the flavour being similar to a combination of bitter almond and cherry St. Lucie Cherries have a very attractive smell and are regulary used as ornamental trees since they also have a beautiful weeping growth habit. The slightly bitter almond aroma of the flowering tree also appears in Mahlep. Culinary Use: The spice has a distinctive flavor which tastes somewhat like cherries and slightly like almonds with a hint of a sharp sour taste and it is very popular in baked goods and holiday foods throughout the Middle East and in neighboring regions like Greece. This spice can be somewhat costly and difficult to obtain outside of the Middle East; specialty markets sometimes carry mahlab either ground whole or in spice blends especially during the holiday season.
